Raja Ravi Verma 2/4

Male Gaze. Curated by Snehal Tambulwadikar-Khedkar. Designed by Snehal Joshi.

History is replete with artists, many anonymous and many who have made their names eternal in history. There are but a very few artists who changed the course of history, created new idioms and left back a legacy so great that they never leave our cultural lives. Raja Ravi Varma is one such gem who could be termed as the greatest Indian artist of the last two centuries. Not only he gauged the changing winds of modernity, but gave it an indigenous visual in a colonized nation. His art, rather his aesthetics, continues to mystify even today, more than a hundred years after him. There is no artist who has been revered by fellow artists, praised by the critics and loved by the populace all in his lifetime. This series of exhibitions is a journey to looking at various aspects of Varma’s art, experience his aesthetics and understand what makes him great. In each of the coming editions, we shall be revealing his persona and his oeuvre rediscovering and uncovering his individuality.
