Quantums of Space. Artworks by Ashok Dhivare. Curated by Snehal Tambulwadikar-Khedkar

There are artists who paint, and then there are ones whose whole life is painting; there simply remains no distinction. These are possessed souls, in a good way, but possessed all the same; in search of the enigma of life. Ashok Dhivre’s art here explores the zest for life, and this named after his own sketchbook, is called ‘quantums of space’. Within his infinite art practice of over four decades, infinite, as one finds hundreds of thousands of sketches and paintings in his studio, these works are unique.

He is one of the most prolific painters of second generation post independence, his works mark a post-modernist shift in Indian painting. After the abstraction of Bombay and Baroda Schools and the wave of neo-tantrism, there came a lull in visual art that woke up again with pop jubilant imagery after the market opened to foreign investments in the 90s. In the early decade of 90s Dhivre, an island, began his experiments with physics and spirituality. Immensely attracted to Osho’s thinking, he immersed into many blends like Buddhism, Bhagavad Gita. The beautiful charcoal here, with pockets of bright life energy that he brings out with genteel deft lines and slight essence of colors, is a culmination of all his philosophies, arduous practice, superior craft and intense belief in humanity. His passion now has mellowed into a ripe maturity of love, while his art ignites the sparkles of life, we call them quantums of space.
